Limburg grid status

Limburg is stacked-congested on the transmission layer for both off-take and feed-in: every sampled service area shows TenneT at its most constrained level in both directions. The biggest off-take queues sit in the industrial south (Maastricht and around the Chemelot cluster) and in Venlo. Structural relief hinges on a set of named 380 kV projects; the upgrade formerly called Maasbracht-Graetheide is now consolidated into TenneT's Maasbracht-Einighausen 380 kV project, in planuitwerking (2026 to 2029), with realisatie 2029 to 2033 and ingebruikname indicatively 2031 to 2034; TenneT flagged four Limburg projects for acceleration in December 2025 while acknowledging at least five more years of significant delays.

What is constrained: Both directions across the province: every sampled service area is at TenneT's most constrained transmission level for off-take and feed-in. The heaviest off-take waiting queues sit in the industrial south (Maastricht, the Chemelot cluster area) and in Venlo.

Still worth screening: Screening in Limburg is a timeline question, not a yes or no: the regional stations often have existing capacity above current contracts, so the binding limit is the transmission layer above, and the relevant date is when the named 380 kV projects land, not whether the local station has room on paper.

What changed: In December 2025 TenneT named four Limburg projects for acceleration (the Buggenum-Kelpen-Nederweert, Buggenum-Blerick and Buggenum-Boekend connections, and the new 380 kV station Einighausen), while stating the province still faces at least five more years of significant grid-connection delays. The upgrade formerly called Maasbracht-Graetheide is now consolidated into TenneT's Maasbracht-Einighausen 380 kV project: planuitwerking 2026 to 2029, realisatie 2029 to 2033, ingebruikname indicatively 2031 to 2034.

What to watch: The Maasbracht-Einighausen 380 kV project's draft project decision (ontwerp-projectbesluit), whose comment period (zienswijze) is expected Q2 2027 per Provincie Limburg, its ingebruikname indicatively 2031 to 2034, and whether the acceleration of the four named projects holds against the acknowledged multi-year delay.

The Enexis congestion studies for Limburg stations (for example Maasbracht and Roermond) are marked as taken over by TenneT because the binding constraint sits on the high-voltage grid, so the structural timeline is set by TenneT's projects, not the regional stations.
